Will there be a "Dislike" button?

"To me it is important to give my children names that are not used anywhere else, at least not in Israel," the father said. "If once people gave Biblical names and that was the icon, then today this is one of the most famous icons in the world. I believe there will be people who will lift an eyebrow, but it is my girl and that's what's fun about it."

Israeli Couple Names Daughter "Like" in Recognition of Facebook

This is so very interesting to me. I just finished my job as an undergraduate assistant in research in which we studied the diversity and complexity of baby names. Culture is very fascinating. Although it is understandable he would name his child after this "icon", it is still very hilarious on our end of the news.

Anyone interested may want to click the link below and check out this book about names. It looks like a good starting point for anyone interested in researching culture and names.

  2. In recognition of Facebook? I initially thought Facebook was just a bubble waiting to burst like MySpace. I guess it's becoming much more prevalent than Google itself.

  3. The story in there of a man naming his daughter "Facebook" because of its part in mobilizing the protesters was actually kind of sweet. It's hard to think about as a name from this end, sure, but...

  4. Facebook has now officially taken over some people's lives. I wonder how that child will feel about their name in 20 years after he/she is disgusted with that obsolete name.

  6. Whats in a name? I kind of like having a pretty common name but maybe that's because I've gotten used to it. Pretty interesting to see different cultures with different ideas. Going to follow.
